The Science of Diffusion Barriers

The thermal failure of black oxide is a "Diffusion-Limited" reaction—oxygen from the air penetrates the crystal and changes its structure. To prevent this, we create a "Core-Shell" structure. We encapsulate the magnetite core in a dense, nano-thin layer of silica (SiO2​). This shell acts as a "Molecular Sieve" that blocks oxygen atoms from reaching the iron, effectively "locking" the black oxidation state. This allows the pigment to survive the high-energy environment of a plastic extruder without losing its chromatic identity.
