The Science of Calcination Morphologies

The performance of Red 101 is rooted in its "Thermodynamic History." By calcining the iron at temperatures above 700∘C, we force the hematite into a "Spherical-to-Rhombohedral" crystal habit. This scientific shape is the most stable configuration for iron oxide, resulting in a lower surface area than needle-shaped pigments. This reduces oil absorption and significantly increases the "Packing Density" of the pigment in a coating, leading to a harder, more durable, and more heat-resistant film than standard red oxides.
