The Science of Particle Morphology

In synthetic iron oxides, color is a function of shape. Yellow iron oxide (α-FeOOH) consists of needle-like "Acicular" crystals, while Red (α-Fe2​O3​) is "Rhombohedral" or "Spherical." We use SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) to verify these shapes. By controlling the "Aspect Ratio" of these crystals, we manage the surface energy of the pigment, which directly impacts the viscosity of the final product and the "Depth of Shade" in the finished coating.
