The Science of Magnetite Stability
Black iron oxide (Fe3O4) is unique because it contains iron in two oxidation states (Fe2+ and Fe3+). In industrial environments, the challenge is preventing the Fe2+ from oxidizing into Fe3+ (turning into red Fe2O3).
